Why you’ll love it

Night trains, street pho, and nobody to compromise with. A GoSmart specialist plans and books it around your dates and pace.

Why it works

A tiny plastic stool on a Hanoi corner, a bowl of pho handed over steaming, motorbikes flowing around you in a river that somehow never quite hits you. Vietnam feeds you brilliantly and cheaply, from Hanoi's chaos down to Hoi An's lanterns.

Worth knowing

The classic solo route runs north to south or the reverse, Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An, with trains, buses, and cheap flights linking them, so set your pace and book the longer hops ahead. It is an easy, sociable country for solo travelers.
Cross the street by walking slowly and steadily, without sudden changes in direction, so the motorbikes flow around you, and eat at the busy stalls where the turnover is high. Carry a little cash in small bills, since cards are patchy outside the cities.
The weather splits the country: the north is cool in winter while the center and south stay warm, so pack for both if you are doing the whole loop. Hoi An for tailoring and lanterns, Hue for imperial history, Hanoi for the street-food energy.
