Why you’ll love it

Emerald wadis, frankincense souks, and dunes that hum at dusk. A GoSmart specialist tailors the route, the stays, and the pace to you.

Why it works

You wade the last stretch of canyon and turn a corner into a hidden pool the colour of turquoise glass, sheer rock walls rising on both sides and date palms leaning over the water. The only sound is the drip off the cliff, and the cold of that first swim in the desert heat is unforgettable.

Worth knowing

Dress modestly out of respect, covering shoulders and knees away from private resorts, and women swimming in the wadis are usually most comfortable in a t-shirt and shorts over swimwear. A little cultural sensitivity is met with real generosity here.
A 4x4 opens up the mountain wadis and desert tracks that a regular car cannot reach, and it is worth the upgrade. Wadi Shab, one of the most beautiful, takes a short hike and a swim to reach its hidden waterfall.
Summer months can be brutally hot, so the cooler October to April window is far more pleasant for hiking and camping. Carry more water than you think you need.

About the place

Oman sits on the southeast corner of Arabia, a country of dramatic wadis, empty deserts, old forts, and some of the most genuinely warm hospitality in the region. It rewards travelers who like their adventure a little off the beaten track.
