Why you’ll love it

Temple mornings, cooking classes, cafes that learn your order. A GoSmart specialist plans and books it around your dates and pace.

Why it works

A monk in saffron robes crosses a temple courtyard at dawn, the smell of incense and street noodles drifting over the old moat, and by the second day the guesthouse owner greets you by name. Chiang Mai is the rare bigger city that feels like it adopts you.

Worth knowing

It is one of the easiest, friendliest, cheapest places to travel solo, with a big community of travelers, cooking classes, and cafes where a table for one is completely normal. The walled old city packs temples, markets, and food into an easy grid.
Do a cooking class and visit a reputable ethical elephant sanctuary rather than a riding camp, and browse the Sunday walking-street market for the real buzz. Rent a scooter only if you are confident, since the traffic can be chaotic.
November to February is cool, dry, and ideal, while the March burning season brings smoky air and summer is hot and wet. The northern mountains and hill villages are an easy add-on for a few days.
