Why it works
Texas Hill Country has become one of America's fastest-growing wine regions, with more than 100 wineries spread across the area. The Tempranillo and Viognier here have quietly gotten very good. Come skeptical, leave converted.
Worth knowing
Book a driver or shuttle. The wineries are spread over ten-plus miles, and the county patrols Highway 290.
Go on a weekday if you can. Weekends bring the bachelorette buses, while a Tuesday afternoon feels like a different place.
Plan on three or four wineries at most. Tastings run about 45 minutes and the pours add up fast.
Fredericksburg is an old German town. Main Street has schnitzel and biergartens between the tasting rooms, so build in a real lunch.
