Why you’ll love it

A guided dark-sky night in the high desert, telescopes, the Marfa Lights viewing area, and a Milky Way you can actually see. Bring a jacket.

Why it works

West Texas has some of the darkest skies in the Lower 48. On a clear, moonless night, the Milky Way is bright enough to surprise people who have never experienced truly dark skies.

Worth knowing

The Marfa Lights platform is free and open all night, nine miles east on US-90. It is convenient, but even a short drive farther from roadside lighting makes the stars noticeably brighter.
Bring a red flashlight, or tape red cellophane over your phone. White light kills night vision for twenty minutes, and everyone around you will quietly hate you for it.
Time it to a new moon. The Milky Way only really shows when the moon is down.
The nearest airports are three hours away in El Paso or Midland. This is a drive-to, stay-a-while place.
