Why it works
Mist sits low on the water at dawn and the little island church seems to float above it, its single bell carrying across the still lake. A wooden pletna glides out from the shore, oars dipping quietly, and the Julian Alps slowly turn gold behind the castle on the cliff.
Worth knowing
You can walk the whole shoreline in about six kilometres, and the flat, easy loop gives you a new angle on the island at every turn. Early morning is when the crowds are thin and the water is glass.
Take a pletna, the traditional flat-bottomed boat, out to the island, then climb the ninety-nine steps and ring the wishing bell. Boatmen row it standing, which is a small spectacle in itself.
Do not leave without a slice of kremsnita, the local cream and custard cake, and more than one lakeside cafe claims to serve the original version. It pairs absurdly well with the view.
About the place
Lake Bled is Slovenia's postcard, an alpine lake with a church-topped island and a medieval castle perched on the crag above. The whole thing sits under the Julian Alps in the country's green northwest, an easy hour from Ljubljana.
