Ferry schedules drive everything, so plan the hops around them and do not cut connections too tight, since weather can cancel the small fast boats. A couple of nights per island beats one, which is all packing and unpacking.
June and September are the sweet spots, warm and lively without the July and August peak heat and crowds. The meltemi wind can whip up in high summer and rough up the crossings, so keep the itinerary a little flexible.
