Why it works
Wind off the Atlantic, a caddie reading a line you would never have seen, and a fairway tumbling through the dunes toward the sea. This is links golf at its finest, played firm and low into the weather, then talked over a pint by the fire.
Worth knowing
West Ireland is links country: Ballybunion, Lahinch, Doonbeg, and Carne, laid out in natural dunes and utterly different from a parkland course. Learn the bump-and-run, because high target golf does not survive the wind out here.
Hire a caddie at least once, because the local read on these blind, rolling links is worth every euro. Book tee times and a driver in advance, since the good courses are spread along the coast.
Late spring through early autumn gives the best odds of playable weather, but rain and wind are always part of it, and that is the point. Pack proper waterproofs and layers, and expect four seasons in a single round.
