Why you’ll love it

Beach towns that never got big, asado smoke at sunset. A GoSmart specialist tailors the route, the stays, and the pace to you.

Why it works

The town runs on the sun here. You watch it drop behind the old lighthouse from a driftwood-and-thatch restaurant, a plate of grilled fish in front of you, and nobody at any table is in a hurry to do anything at all. That is rather the whole idea.

Worth knowing

High season is the southern summer, roughly December to February, when the village hums and prices climb. Come in the shoulder months and you get the same beaches with a fraction of the people.
Book a long lunch at one of the beachfront parrillas and let it run into the afternoon, since the slow pace is the point. Cards work in the restaurants, but keep some cash for the small stands and markets.
There is little in the way of nightlife or big resorts here by design. If you want buzz and casinos, Punta del Este is a short drive west.

About the place

Jose Ignacio is a tiny, chic beach village on Uruguay's Atlantic coast, a low-key counterpoint to flashy Punta del Este just down the road. Sand streets, a landmark lighthouse, and a serious food scene draw a quiet crowd that likes it understated.
