Why you’ll love it

The Camino gives you one job a day. Everything else quiets down. A GoSmart specialist plans and books it around your dates and pace.

Why it works

The scallop shells and yellow arrows lead you out of a village before the cafes have opened, boots on old stone, mist burning off the fields. By mid-morning your world has shrunk to the next ridge, the ache in your feet, and whoever happens to fall into step beside you, and it is strangely enough.

Worth knowing

Pick up a credential, the pilgrim passport, and collect a stamp at each stop, since it is your ticket to the albergues and to the Compostela certificate at the end. To earn that certificate you need to walk at least the last 100 kilometres from Sarria.
Blisters end more Caminos than anything else. Break your boots in thoroughly before you go, carry good socks, and stop to treat a hot spot the moment you feel one rather than pushing on.
You do not need to camp or carry a tent. A network of albergues, hostels for pilgrims, lines the whole route, and in the busy months arriving by early afternoon helps you get a bed.

About the place

The Camino Frances is the classic pilgrim route, running roughly 780 kilometres from Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in France across northern Spain to the cathedral in Santiago de Compostela. The full walk takes most people around five weeks, though many just do the final stretch.
