Why it works
Steam pours off the geyser basin and freezes into rime on the pines, and a bison shoulders through the snow with frost caked on its beard, unbothered by the cold or by you. In summer this spot is a parking lot. Today it is just you, the hiss of the vents, and the crunch of your own boots.
Worth knowing
Nearly all the interior roads close to regular cars in winter. You reach the geyser basins and Old Faithful by guided snowcoach or snowmobile from the gateway towns, which is part of the adventure.
Wildlife is easier to spot against the snow but no less dangerous, so keep well back from bison and give every animal room. A good spotting scope and a warm thermos make the slow, cold watching worth it.
The north road between Mammoth and Cooke City stays plowed and open to cars year-round, so Lamar Valley wildlife watching is doable even if you skip the snowcoach.
About the place
Yellowstone in winter is a different park entirely, its geothermal basins steaming against snowfields and its valleys quiet with wolves and bison. Most of the interior empties out once the crowds and the cars are gone.
