Cabins range from cozy to enormous, and the good ones with a view, a hot tub, and easy road access book early for fall leaf season and summer. Check how steep and how paved the access road is, because some are a white-knuckle drive.
Base near Gatlinburg or Pigeon Forge for restaurants, Dollywood, and quick park access, or go deeper and quieter if you want the cabin itself to be the trip. They are genuinely different vacations, so choose on purpose.
October leaf season is glorious and also the busiest and priciest, with heavy traffic around Gatlinburg. Late spring and early summer are greener, calmer, and easier.
About the place
Great Smoky Mountains National Park is the most-visited park in the country. Entry is free, though parking for longer visits now requires a parking tag. Cades Cove and the Newfound Gap road are the classic drives, and the black bears are ones you watch from a distance and never feed.
