Why it works
Waterfalls pour off sheer walls straight into a black fjord, cloud tearing across peaks that vanish into the mist, and it looks so staged you keep reminding yourself it is real. Fiordland is New Zealand at its most jaw-dropping, and the rain is part of the show.
Worth knowing
Milford Sound is the famous one and Doubtful Sound the wilder, quieter alternative. It is one of the wettest places on earth, but rain is not a washout here, it turns the walls into hundreds of temporary waterfalls, so do not cancel for weather.
The road to Milford is spectacular, long, and has no services, so fuel up, start early, and allow far more time than the distance suggests. A boat cruise or a kayak gets you onto the water where the scale really lands.
Summer, December to February, is peak and busiest, while the shoulder seasons are quieter with a real chance of snow on the tops. Bring layers and full waterproofs whatever the forecast, and brace for sandflies, which are relentless.
