The Pacific coast is the surf-and-jungle heartland, with beach towns like Santa Teresa, Nosara, and Dominical fronting national parks full of wildlife. Roads to the good breaks are often rough dirt, so a 4x4 or arranged transfers make life easier.
Match the beach to your level, since some breaks are forgiving beach breaks and others are heavy. Book a lesson your first session, and paddle out early before the wind and the crowd come up.
The dry season, December to April, brings the most reliable sun and cleaner conditions, while the green season is lush, cheaper, and often has better surf with afternoon rain. Pack reef-safe sunscreen and bug spray, and expect to be pleasantly damp either way.
