Why you’ll love it

Liter mugs, brass bands, and instant friends at every table. A GoSmart specialist handles the group logistics so nobody has to be the planner.

Why it works

You squeeze onto a bench in a heaving tent, the smell of roast chicken and warm pretzels everywhere, a server swings six liter steins in one fist, and a brass band strikes up as the whole table stands on the seats for a toast before you have finished your first. That is Oktoberfest.

Worth knowing

It is mostly not in October. The festival runs from roughly the third Saturday of September to the first Sunday of October, about 16 to 18 days, so book late September for the fullest swing.
Evening and weekend tables are usually available only through reservations that include prepaid food and beer packages. If you do not have one, arrive early in the day before the tents fill.
Wear the tracht. Locals and visitors alike turn up in lederhosen and dirndls, and you will feel more out of place in normal clothes than in costume, so buy or rent one before you go.
Bring cash, since cards are spotty inside the tents. Beer is sold only by the full liter Mass and it hits hard, so eat as you go, and book lodging early because all of Munich fills up for the festival.
