Why you’ll love it

Live aboard, dive four times a day, see what the ocean was. A GoSmart cruise specialist matches you to the right ship, cabin, and sailing.

Why it works

You roll backward off the boat into water so full of life it is almost crowded: schools that block the sun, reef sharks cruising the drop-off, and coral in colors that look invented. Raja Ampat is one of the richest marine ecosystems on Earth, and a liveaboard is how you reach it.

Worth knowing

This is a serious diving trip on a boat you live aboard for a week, reaching remote sites no day boat can. Most itineraries want you already certified and comfortable, sometimes with a minimum logged-dive count, so check the requirements.
The currents that feed all that life can be strong, so this rewards confident divers, and a good guide reads the tides to time each dive. Nitrox and a dive computer are worth having along.
The calmer, clearer season runs roughly October to April. Getting there is a mission: fly to Sorong in West Papua via Jakarta or Makassar, then transfer to the boat, so this is a long-haul commitment.

About the place

Raja Ampat is a sprawl of jungle-topped limestone islands off far eastern Indonesia, gloriously remote and undeveloped, which is exactly why the reefs are still this healthy.
