Why it works

Most visitors head to Oia for sunset, but many travelers remember the walk from Fira to Oia even more than the sunset itself.

Worth knowing

Many larger cruise ships anchor in the caldera and tender passengers ashore, so getting off can take longer than a typical port stop. Go early.
Skip the donkeys from the old port, which are rough on the animals, and take the cable car. If you are riding it back down, try to return before mid-afternoon. The wait can easily stretch well over an hour once everyone heads back to the ship.
September is the sweet spot. The sea is still warm, the islands are quieter, and you are not melting on the steps.
Give yourself a night or three in Rome and Athens on either end if you can. One port day is not enough for the Vatican or the Acropolis.
