Why it works

Salt hangs in the air as the ship eases away from Miami at dusk, the skyline sliding astern, and by the time you have found the top deck the whole horizon is open water and pink sky. A week later you have snorkeled Grand Cayman and wandered Cozumel without ever unpacking twice.

Worth knowing

This is a classic, easy first cruise: warm water, a short flight to Miami, and generally calmer seas than many ocean crossings. Book the marquee excursions, Stingray City in Grand Cayman and reef snorkeling in Cozumel, ahead of time, since they sell out.
An inside cabin saves real money if you will barely be in the room, but a balcony earns its keep on a sea-heavy itinerary like this one, where the view is the point. Decide by how much time you will actually spend on deck.
Hurricane season runs roughly June to November, which brings lower fares and a small weather risk. Winter and spring are calmer and pricier.
