Why it works

Glacier Bay is the day most people remember. Standing on deck surrounded by walls of blue ice is unforgettable, and if you are lucky enough to witness a glacier calve, the crack echoes across the bay before the ice crashes into the water.

Worth knowing

Do not stress too much about which side of the ship you book. Captains usually turn the ship at the major glaciers so guests on both sides get great views. A balcony is nice, but the best Glacier Bay experience is often out on the open decks.
Dress in layers instead of one heavy coat. Even in July, Glacier Bay is often in the 50s with wind and light rain, especially when you are out on deck.
May brings fewer people, lower fares, and still plenty of ice. June through August is peak for a reason, but the ports feel crowded. By September the ice can be slippery and some glaciers are too wet to visit, though later summer is when the glaciers are calving, which is an amazing spectacle.

About the place

Juneau is the only U.S. state capital that is not connected to the rest of the North American road system by highway. Mendenhall Glacier is about 20 minutes from the cruise docks, making it one of the easiest glaciers to visit during a port stop.
