Glossy leaves, carved gilt, moss on stone: Ponta Delgada asks you to slow down
Ponta Delgada, in Texture
We had one night in Ponta Delgada before heading west, and the island immediately asked us to slow down.
At the pineapple farm, everything began up close: glossy leaves, fruit growing low to the ground, and the kind of detail you notice only when you stop rushing. In the botanical gardens, roots felt architectural; moss and fungi turned every surface into its own small landscape.
Then came the church, a simple worship space with incredible carved gilt, dark stone, and a quiet interior that shifted the whole mood.
The big Azores views were still ahead. But first, there were the details.
The weather was so warm and humid. I finally understood why people call it the Hawaii of Europe.
