The Colosseum: Nearly 2,000 Years of Stories
Standing inside Rome’s Colosseum, it’s hard to imagine that nearly 2,000 years ago, this was filled with tens of thousands of spectators watching gladiators, wild animals, and spectacular public events.
Construction began around AD 72 under Emperor Vespasian and was completed by his son Titus. The massive amphitheater could hold an estimated 50,000–65,000 people.
The Colosseum wasn’t always the weathered stone structure we see today. Over the centuries, earthquakes, fires, and the reuse of its stone changed its appearance dramatically.
Today, you can walk through the same ancient arena and stand where Romans once gathered to watch history unfold.
The Colosseum is huge, but seeing its size from the inside is something completely different. Standing on the arena floor and looking up at the towering tiers of seats was incredible. And then looking down beneath the floor, where gladiators and animals were once held and staged before their fights, made the history feel even more real. What a moment to stand where history actually happened!
